Pregnant or bringing a child into your family?

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) is a federal law that requires Amazon to reasonably accommodate your physical condition on the job if you are pregnant.

Your rights under the PWFA:

  • You have the right to reasonable accommodations, which is a change to your job so that you can keep working safely while you are pregnant or dealing with the effects of childbirth.
  • Basic accommodations can include longer break periods, having a chair and water at your station, and more frequent rest and bathroom breaks.
  • Amazon may also be required to provide more significant accommodations such as limiting the amount you have to lift or putting you on light duty.

Amazon may not do the following if you are pregnant:

  • Amazon may not refuse reasonable accommodations that are medically necessary unless it would cause them undue hardship.
  • Amazon may not require you to go on unpaid leave.
  • Amazon may not fire you or punish you for seeking reasonable accommodations for your pregnancy.
  • Amazon may not punish you for speaking up for a coworker who needs reasonable accommodations.

Other laws that protect pregnant workers

Pregnant workers also have rights under laws that protect all workers with disabilities from discrimination and provide for leave associated with childbirth or bringing a child into the family, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and state and local laws.
